This Colombo travel guide is for the traveler who wants the whole picture in one place: where to sleep beside the Indian Ocean or among the leafy streets of Cinnamon Gardens, what a hopper breakfast and a crab dinner actually cost, which heritage sights are worth the morning, and how a day adds up at three levels of comfort. Sri Lanka’s commercial capital rewards two or three unhurried days.

Colombo travel guide: when to go
Colombo is warm all year, with highs around 31 C in March and April and cooler minimums near 22 C in the drier winter months. Rain arrives with two monsoon seasons, roughly April to June and September to November, and the annual total is generous at about 2,500 millimeters. December to March is the easy window for walking the seafront and the old Fort. In the wetter months, showers tend to come in bursts, so a compact umbrella, a light jacket and a flexible afternoon make the city just as pleasant, and indoor stops such as museums, galleries and spas fill the gaps.
Where to stay in Colombo
Choose by mood. Fort and Galle Face hold most of the five-star hotels and face the ocean, with the Galle Face Green promenade at your door. Cinnamon Gardens (Colombo 7) is the leafy district of the National Museum, Independence Square, galleries and boutique stays. Kollupitiya and Colombo 3 put you close to the shops and restaurants along Galle Road. Mount Lavinia adds a beachside option south of the center.
At the top end, Paradise Road Tintagel Colombo, a boutique address in Cinnamon Gardens, has been listed from about US$285 a night (LKR 94,000). Shangri-La Colombo, with 541 rooms facing Galle Face Green and direct access to One Galle Face Mall, shows rates from about US$160 to 227 a night depending on the offer. Galle Face Hotel, the seafront heritage hotel at 2 Galle Road that describes itself as one of the oldest east of Suez, publishes its own rates and has offered 20 percent off for bookings made a month ahead.
In the middle of the range, Cinnamon Life at City of Dreams is around US$155, Taj Samudra about US$170, De Saram House by Geoffrey Bawa in Cinnamon Gardens about US$135, and Jetwing Colombo Seven, with its rooftop pool, about US$120. For good value, Taprobane House is around US$58, Park Street Suites about US$70, MK Colombo in Wellawatte about US$54 and Cinnamon Red Colombo about US$52. Our Colombo in 48 hours plan pairs the best of these with a day-by-day route.
Where to eat and drink
Start with a hopper. These bowl-shaped rice-flour pancakes, with a runny egg in the center, share the table with string hoppers, milk rice and pol roti. Upali’s is a favorite address for a Sri Lankan breakfast. At lunch, Palmyrah specializes in northern Sri Lankan cooking, and an inexpensive restaurant meal averages about LKR 1,270 (US$3.80), with a range of LKR 700 to 2,850.
For dinner, Ministry of Crab, in the Dutch Hospital in Fort, is known for whole mud crab eaten with your hands, and it is wise to reserve a few days ahead. Nihonbashi in Colombo 3 draws sushi lovers, The Lagoon inside Cinnamon Grand cooks seafood from a live counter, and 1864 at Galle Face Hotel serves multi-course tasting menus beside the ocean. A mid-range meal for two, without drinks, is typically about LKR 8,250 (US$25), with a range of LKR 6,000 to 10,000. For the fullest picture of the top tables, see our guide to fine dining in Colombo.
For coffee and an hour of calm, Paradise Road The Gallery Café is open from 10 am to midnight, and Gallery Cafe, in a former Geoffrey Bawa office building, is a lovely stop on a design walk. A cappuccino averages about LKR 830 (US$2.50), and a pint of local draft beer about LKR 730 (US$2.20).
What to see
Galle Face Green is the city’s seafront lawn, once a racecourse and golf course, and sunset is the hour to be there. Gangaramaya Temple, near Beira Lake, blends Sri Lankan, Thai, Indian and Chinese styles, and its Seema Malaka assembly hall on the lake was designed by Geoffrey Bawa. The temple sells entrance tickets online, so check the current price on its website. Dress with covered shoulders and knees, and be ready to remove shoes.
The National Museum, founded in 1877 in Cinnamon Gardens, holds the throne and crown jewels of the last king of Kandy. Independence Square is nearby. Bawa fans can book a morning walk of two to two and a half hours that starts at his city residence, Number 11, and passes Seema Malaka. The Lionel Wendt Art Gallery and the Sapumal Foundation on Barnes Place make a quiet afternoon. Beira Lake, a 65-hectare lake in the city center that hosts regattas and theatrical events, is pleasant for an easy stroll, and Pettah, the market district just outside Fort, rewards an early-morning visit with its stalls and traders.
A short two-to-three-day itinerary
Day one. Breakfast at Upali’s, then Galle Face Green and a heritage walk through Fort. Take afternoon tea at the Galle Face Hotel and finish with crab at Ministry of Crab.
Day two. Spend the morning with Bawa’s Colombo, from Number 11 to Seema Malaka and the Gallery Cafe. In the afternoon, visit the National Museum and the galleries of Barnes Place.
Day three. Head out of town. Galle Fort, on the southern coast, works as a day trip or an overnight, and our guide to forty-eight hours in Galle Fort is worth reading first. Kandy, with its lake and temple, is a classic outing, described in a day in Kandy.
Wellness and a slower hour
Colombo is a good place to rest. Spa Ceylon offers Ayurvedic treatments, with more than twenty therapies on its menu, and the larger hotels keep their own spas and pools. If you wish to take the tradition further, the hills above Kandy hold retreats described in our note on Ayurveda in the hill country, and tea country beyond is covered in Sri Lanka’s tea country. A massage and a long evening by the ocean is a fine way to recover from a flight.
Getting around Colombo
Taxis start at about LKR 130 (US$0.40) on the standard tariff, and a one-way local transport ticket averages about LKR 55 (US$0.17). Three-wheelers, ride-hailing apps and metered taxis are all easy to find; agree the fare first or use an app with a fixed price. The seafront, Fort and parts of Cinnamon Gardens are good for walking in the cooler hours, and a driver for the day is a sensible choice for the Bawa route and for day trips.
Practical notes for a smooth trip
Many restaurants and hotels add a service charge, often around 10 percent; where it is not included, a small tip is welcome. Tourist SIMs and eSIMs are sold by the main operators, including Dialog and Mobitel, and counters at the airport can set you up (bring your passport). Since 25 May 2026, travelers from 40 listed countries, including Australia, Canada, France, Germany, India, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States, can obtain a tourist Electronic Travel Authorization free of charge, valid for 30 days with double entry. Everyone needs the ETA before arrival, so apply online through the official site in advance, and check requirements for your own passport. Temples and mosques ask for modest dress.

Insider tips
Book Ministry of Crab a few days ahead and arrive hungry. Reach Galle Face Green about an hour before sunset. Wear light cotton and a hat for walking, and keep a small bag of rupees for temple donations and snacks. Colombo’s design heritage is best seen in the morning, when the light is soft and the streets are quiet. Finally, confirm opening hours before heading to any gallery or small restaurant, because schedules change with the season.
