Calm water and a bridge in Colombo, Sri Lanka

Colombo in 48 Hours: Galle Face, Geoffrey Bawa and a Table by the Sea

Sri Lanka’s capital pairs colonial grace, a master architect’s legacy and a generous table. A relaxed two-day itinerary, from the oceanfront green to a quiet lakeside temple.

Colombo rewards anyone who stays a little longer than a stopover. Spend 48 hours in Colombo and you will find an oceanfront green, a celebrated architect’s house, and some of the island’s most memorable meals. This short itinerary balances sights with long, easy pauses.

Day one: ocean air and old Colombo

Start early on Galle Face Green, the oceanfront lawn that was once a racecourse and golf course. Kites, sea breeze, a few vendors setting up: this is the city at its most relaxed. Afterward, a Sri Lankan breakfast at Upali’s of stringhoppers, hoppers, milk rice and pol roti is a fine way to begin.

Mid-morning, visit Gangaramaya Monastery, or take a guided walk through the Portuguese, Dutch and English commercial heritage of the city. Colombo City Walks, led by a historian, is one option. For lunch, Palmyrah offers northern Sri Lankan cuisine.

As the afternoon softens, return to the green. The Galle Face Hotel, which opened in 1864 and faces the lawn, serves afternoon tea on its terrace, and its Terrace is a lovely place for sunset cocktails. Then dinner at Ministry of Crab, where large crabs and prawns arrive in local flavors and eating with your hands is encouraged.

Day two: Geoffrey Bawa’s Colombo

The second morning belongs to Geoffrey Bawa, one of Sri Lanka’s best-loved architects. Number 11, his city residence, is the center of a guided tour that also visits the Seema Malaka Temple on Beira Lake and ends with a drink at Gallery Cafe. The tour lasts two to two and a half hours. Gallery Cafe occupies a former Bawa office building, and its tropical-modern design is a pleasure on its own.

Linger over lunch, then give the afternoon to art. The Lionel Wendt Art Gallery and the Sapumal Foundation on Barnes Place both reward an unhurried hour. If you would like a rest after the walking, Spa Ceylon’s Ayurveda spas offer more than twenty therapies, including the Ultimate Foot Ritual.
