Shopping in Doha: Souq Waqif Oud, Place Vendôme and Qatari Designers

Doha pairs a traditional souq of oud and pearls with polished malls and a growing circle of Qatari designers. A route through all three, with what to look for.

Shopping in Doha moves between two moods. One is the lantern-lit lanes of a traditional souq, where oud perfume and silver are sold across a counter. The other is a gleaming mall with flagship boutiques and a hushed, cool atmosphere. Here’s a route that takes in both, with a few Qatari names worth seeking out.

Souq Waqif: oud, pearls and silver

Start in the evening, when the souq comes alive. Stalls here sell Qatari-grown dates, embroidered dresses, silver, and oud perfume in small glass bottles. Pearls are a local story. One shop, Pahlwan Saad Ismail Al Jassim, is known as The Old Pearl Diver, and its owner is one of the last remaining pearl divers in Qatar.

For fragrance, take your time. Ask to try oud oil on your skin and let it settle for ten minutes before you decide; the scent changes as it warms. Bakhoor, the scented wood chips burned at home, makes a lovely gift that travels well.

Katara Cultural Village: Galeries Lafayette and local labels

Katara blends craft stalls, galleries and independent boutiques, with pashminas, perfume and Arabic coffee along its souq-style streets. It also houses Galeries Lafayette Doha, a French department store carrying more than 400 high-end brands, among them Acne Studios and Zimmermann, alongside Qatari labels such as Nouf Jewellery and 1309Studios.

Look, too, for Qatari designers Yasmin Mansour, Tiiya and Hissa Haddad, and for jewelry by Ghada Albuainain. These are names you won’t find on a high street back home, which is exactly the point.

Place Vendôme Mall, Lusail

The flagship address for international houses, with boutiques for Dior, Bulgari, Jimmy Choo and Gucci, some with collections adapted for local tastes. A three-story Sephora gathers local and international fragrance and beauty brands under one roof, which makes it a handy stop for perfume lovers who want to compare.

The Pearl-Qatar and Villaggio

At the Marsa Arabia marina on The Pearl-Qatar, a designer center holds Hermès, Versace and Elie Saab. Across town, Villaggio Mall is styled after Venice, complete with gondolas on its canals, and its boutiques include Jo Malone. Lunch with a canal view is hard to beat.

A suggested day for shopping in Doha

Mornings suit Katara, when the lanes are quiet and light is soft. Move to Place Vendôme after lunch for the air-conditioned calm, then return to Souq Waqif at dusk for oud, tea and a slow walk. Opening hours shift around prayer times and seasons, so check them as you plan.
