A day in Nizwa and Jebel Akhdar shows you another side of Oman: the inland, mountain side, where a great fort anchors the town and roses are distilled by hand. Begin with the fort and souq in Nizwa, then climb toward the cool heights of Jebel Akhdar. Here is how to shape the day, and what to look for along the way.
Nizwa Fort, the landmark of the interior
Nizwa Fort is one of Oman’s most visited national attractions and served as the administrative seat of Nizwa’s rulers. Its main tower is about thirty meters tall, with very thick walls, and two cannons stand at the entrance. Inside, a maze of rooms, narrow staircases, corridors, high-ceilinged halls and terraces rewards a slow exploration. Visit the fort first, then the souq.
The souq and the Friday market
Beside the fort walls, Nizwa Souq blends traditional and modern architecture, and its many alleys and sections have been home to several communities for hundreds of years. Wander without a plan. If your visit falls on a Friday, you can also see Nizwa’s well-known cattle market, which adds real color to the day.
Up to Jebel Akhdar, home of Omani rose water
Jebel Akhdar lies in the western Hajar range, in Dakhiliyah Governorate. Its Saiq Plateau rises to more than 2,000 meters above sea level, so the air is noticeably cooler. Damask roses grow on the terraces near the summit, and villages such as Al Aqar, Al Ayn, Ash Sharayjah and Wadi Bani Habib are associated with them.
Rose water here is made slowly. Picked flowers must be kept cool and moist and used quickly, because they wilt and lose potency. Turning about one and a half kilograms of petals into raw rose-water distillate takes around three hours, and each batch then needs three to four months of airtight cooling, filtration and storage. A small bottle makes a beautiful gift. If seeing the harvest is a priority, ask your hotel or guide about timing.
Practical notes for a Nizwa day
Arrange a private driver or guide through your hotel or a reputable operator, and confirm opening times and road conditions as of this writing. Bring a light layer for the cooler altitude and carry water.
