Fine dining in Istanbul has found its own voice, and it speaks fluent Anatolian. Since the Michelin Guide arrived in the city in 2022, a handful of kitchens have become reasons to book a flight on their own. This guide covers the tables to reserve first, with a few notes on pairing each dinner with the view outside.
Fine dining in Istanbul: the starred tables
When the guide launched, it recognized five restaurants with stars. As of this writing, those names remain the natural place to begin. Reserve early, ask about tasting menus, and plan the evening around the light.
TURK Fatih Tutak, Şişli
Chef Fatih Tutak’s restaurant held the guide’s only two-star rating at the launch, and it remains a wonderfully theatrical dinner. The cooking begins with Turkish flavors and travels from there, with plates that reward slow looking. Come hungry. Stay a while.
Mikla, Beyoğlu
High above Beyoğlu, Mikla is where the city’s skyline becomes part of the menu. In warm weather, ask for a terrace table and arrive before sunset, so the domes and minarets turn gold while the first course is still on its way. The kitchen draws on Anatolian ingredients with a modern, precise hand. It’s a dinner that suits an anniversary or a long-awaited reunion.
Neolokal, Karaköy
Inside the Istanbul Modern museum on the Karaköy waterfront, Neolokal turns regional ingredients and heritage techniques into something quietly inventive. Chef Maksut Aşkar and his team cook with Anatolia in mind, and Michelin has also honored the restaurant with a Green Star for its work in protecting and promoting Turkish culinary heritage. Pair dinner with an afternoon among the galleries, and the day takes on a lovely shape.
Araka and Nicole
Araka sits in Yeniköy, on the European shore of the Bosphorus, and makes a graceful excuse to leave the center for an evening. The drive or boat transfer along the water is part of the pleasure. Nicole, in Beyoğlu, completes the starred list and lies in the same district as Mikla, so the two can anchor a weekend of memorable dinners.
Beyond the stars
Michelin’s Bib Gourmand list also recognizes beautifully cooked classics, among them Karaköy Lokantası and the historic Pandeli, near the Spice Bazaar. They suit a long, leisurely lunch, the kind that fills the gap between a starred dinner and the next one.
Planning your Istanbul evenings
- Book tasting-menu tables well ahead, especially for Friday and Saturday evenings.
- Share dietary needs when you reserve, so the kitchen can plan around them.
- Leave time for the Bosphorus, whether by ferry at dusk or from a hotel terrace before dinner.
- Dress with polish; Istanbul’s dining rooms reward an elegant evening.
A dinner here pairs naturally with a grand stay. Our guide to Istanbul’s historic hotels, Pera Palace and Çırağan Palace, offers two beautiful places to return to afterward. Michelin recognition changes over time, so check each restaurant’s current status when you book.
