The Grand Egyptian Museum in Giza sits about two kilometers from the Pyramids of Giza, and from the top of its Grand Staircase you can see them. If you have one day in Cairo and a love of antiquity, this is where to spend it. Here is how to move through the museum calmly, what to look for, and how to leave time to simply stand and take it in.
The museum opened to the public in November 2025. As of this writing, check the official site for hours, ticketing and which spaces are open on your date.
Begin in the atrium with Ramesses II
Step inside and the scale arrives at once. A colossal standing statue of Ramesses II, roughly 3,200 years old, dominates the atrium and sets the tone for everything that follows. Outside, a hanging obelisk of the same king stands by the entrance. Take a few minutes. The building is vast, and a slow start pays off later.
The Grand Staircase and the view of Giza
Around sixty statues and objects line the staircase as you rise toward the upper galleries. You can walk up, use a moving walkway or take a lift. At the top, the view reaches across to the Giza pyramids. Pause here. Phones are welcome for photographs, though cameras are checked with security.
Twelve main galleries, in order
The main galleries are organized by period and by theme, moving through the Old, Middle and New Kingdoms and the Late Period, and across ideas such as society, kingship and beliefs. Follow them in numerical order and the story builds naturally. Look for the statue of the scribe Mitri, the silver bracelets of Hetepheres I, a statue of Hatshepsut and the painted soldier models from the tomb of Mesehti. Small objects, enormous presence.
The Tutankhamun collection
For many visitors this is the heart of the day. The Tutankhamun galleries are reached by turning right at the top of the staircase, and the collection of golden treasures found with the young king, around five thousand pieces, is presented together in one place, with the gold death mask among the stars. Allow generous time, and visit these galleries while you are fresh.
Planning your visit to the Grand Egyptian Museum
Tickets can be bought online in advance, and guided tours of around ninety minutes are offered in English. The galleries are clearly labeled and have ramps for wheelchair users. Plan for a half day at minimum and a full day if you wish to linger, and wear comfortable shoes.
For a longer itinerary, our journey beside the pyramids through Egypt continues the story beyond Giza.
